Roddy Brown lived next door to Charlie’s Place, where his family ran the Little Club Bamboo.
As a boy, he watched tour buses pull up with legends like James Brown and listened to the music from home.
What stuck with him most was the diverse crowd—Black and White patrons dancing together, an act of quiet rebellion in a divided time.
Roddy’s wife, Fannie T. Brown, became the Executive Director of the Historic Myrtle Beach Colored School Museum.
Roddy himself worked to preserve Charlie’s Place through the Carver Street Economic Renaissance Corporation and helped push for the site’s restoration.
Thanks to efforts like his, Charlie’s Place reopened to visitors in 2020.
