The Memory Keeper

Patricia Burgess

Patricia Burgess spent much of her childhood at Charlie’s Place. She recalled neighborhood-wide Christmas gift giveaways, Easter egg hunts, and early-evening dance sessions for well-dressed teens.

A standout dancer in Myrtle Beach, Patricia was 17 the night the club was attacked. Her grandfather stood guard with a gun while the family sheltered.

The next day, she went to work for a family whose patriarch, she discovered, had been part of the attack.

Patricia later became a passionate historian and storyteller, generously sharing her memories of segregation, Charlie’s Place, and Myrtle Beach’s evolution.

She was born, raised and has lived in Myrtle Beach all her life.
