Sin City

In the second chapter of our story, the sound of Charlie’s Place takes center stage.

The music played here wasn’t background noise; it was rebellion in rhythm. Black musicians brought their magic to Carver Street, and the irresistible pull of a danceable backbeat began to erode the barriers that stood outside the club’s walls.

White youth crossed the tracks for a taste of it. The local Black community rallied around it.

And Myrtle Beach, once tightly controlled by the codes of segregation, started to vibrate with something new and dangerous: integration through joy. But every step forward invited a backlash.

“All the dancers wanted that black music. Why? Because it had a danceable backbeat.”
